Career Corners: When That Call Comes

- By Linda E. Sweeney, MT Editor-

careercallIt’s a bright moment when the phone rings and it’s for scheduling an interview you were hoping to receive. You will soon have the opportunity to sell yourself face-to-face and bring to life that on paper and more.

Knock ‘em Dead 2006: The Ultimate Job Seekers Guide by Martin Yates

This is the time to follow the good tips you have read in books about interviewing skills and techniques. If you haven’t read one lately, is a good choice. It provides over 200 great answers to tough interview questions. The library carries other similar books that can be good sources of information too. While you may be comfortable and confident with being interviewed, it is always helpful to review possible questions and scenarios, and to consider how your response would be. You will enter the interview better prepared and exit knowing you did your homework, including researching information about the organization.

It’s Time

It’s time to seize new opportunities and you can start by visiting upcoming Michigan career/job fairs. As you plan to do so, be sure to check out the book, America’s Top Jobs for College Graduates, by J. Michael Farr, 3rd Ed. This is what you’ll find inside:
  • Thorough descriptions of jobs most likely held by college graduates
  • Specifics on earnings, training required, projected growth, and more
  • Results-oriented advice on planning your career—and getting a good job in less time
  • Earnings and demand for degree holders by college major and occupation
  • Recommended books and Web sites on careers and education
The book lists a summary of its major sections on the Table of Contents page. The one I recommend reading first is Section Three: Career Planning and Job Search Advice. Here you’ll find suggestions and search methods that help you get a better job in less time. Next, look at the resources and Internet sites information. It offers general advice on finding career and job search information as well as recommended books to read on self-employment and starting your own business.

This isn’t just for those who already have a college degree but for those considering one too. Remember, it is never too late to start or return to school. Your efforts will pay you back handsomely one day.
