Frankenmuth Farmers Market’s Harvests for the Hungry

The Frankenmuth Farmers Market (FFM) will host three “Harvest for the Hungry” food drives at the Market, 8am-2pm this Saturday, August 22, September 17, and October 17.  The food collections will benefit local food banks in dire need of food.  Everyone is invited to bring non-perishable food items to donate and also purchase fresh, locally grown produce from farmers and artisans at the Market, held in downtown Frankenmuth next to the Harvest Coffeehouse, 626 S. Main Street .  A large wagon used to collect all of the food will immediately be taken to area food banks for distribution on each of the three Saturdays.

Dr. Fred Zehnder, of Family Eye Care Center and an avid volunteer at Saginaw ’s East Side Soup Kitchen in Saginaw , conceived the idea as a way to collect food, prevent surplus produce from going to waste, support farmers for their hard work, and raise awareness for the constant need of food.  Even as the bountiful harvest comes in from the fields, there are many people still in need of food.

Dr. Zehnder reported, “One day last week in Saginaw , the hungry waited in line over three hours to receive 1,000 boxes of food that were distributed.  The street had to be closed to accommodate the line.  This takes place just miles from our beautiful, bountiful fields currently in harvest.  Surely, with everyone’s help, we can all pitch in a little to feed so many in our region!”  Even an extra head of cabbage, a dozen ears of corn, or an extra melon purchased from Market growers will go far in feeding many.

The Frankenmuth Farmers Market is hailed as one of Michigan ’s “10 Great Farmers Markets” by Michigan Travel Ideas – Official State Travel Guide.  The Market will continue through October 17 in downtown Frankenmuth.  More upcoming Market events include a Pig Roast by Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth August 29, a Christkindlmarkt on Thanksgiving Weekend November 27-29, and a Learn Great Foods Tour and Dinner November 28 (www.learngreatfoods.com).
