Since 2002, students in the City of Farmington Hills Cultural Arts programs have learned about art in the charming setting of the Stables Studio, located in Heritage Park. One of the first instructors to take advantage of the new space was Donna Vogelheim, a well-known local artist and teacher, who has taught several classes and workshops over the years. Vogelheim is currently teaching “Painting with Watercolor,” a series of classes that runs from November 7 through December 12.
Art work from over 40 of Volgelheim’s students is on display through December 1 at the Farmington Hills City Hall at 31555 Eleven Mile Road and the Farmington City Hall at 23600 Liberty as part of the Art in the Corridor series sponsored by the Farmington Area Arts Commission. Both exhibits are open during regular business hours. A “Meet the Artists” reception will be held at the Farmington Hills City Hall on Wednesday, November 8 from 5 – 7 p.m. The free reception is open to the public and refreshments will be served.
The collection of paintings includes both the work of beginners and more accomplished students who have also exhibited elsewhere. Several of the students have been with Vogelheim since she began classes at the Stables and she is proud to point out their continuing development. “Even the beginning students often show something that amazes me,” she says. “They find a small piece upon which to build from the very start, often not even realizing it’s good.” Vogelheim was awarded the 1991 Artist in Residence Award by the City of Farmington and has continued to work as a muralist, painter, juror, and curator. Her works are in collections across the world and she has taught therapy through art, as well.
Other classes held at the Stables include ceramics for children and adults, oil painting, figure drawing and fashion illustration, jewelry making, photography, and summer art camps, among others.
