| Seizing New Opportunities |
-By Linda E. Sweeney, Editor-
I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Gary Gabel, when he spoke to the Emerging Leaders Program group at U of M-Dearborn last year. He is author of “Personal Takeover – Create a Professional Life Full of Optimism, Energy, and Impact.”
He shared advice about having a takeover mindset and discussed how people handle situations that occur in their professional and personal lives. Your mindset determines your outlook. One person may see him or herself as a victim of circumstances while another person would see a chance to embrace new opportunities. A great example is about an engineer who lost his job twice due to downsizing. The first time he became angry and lethargic. The second time he identified options, took on a takeover mindset and found a new job quicker.
If you lose your job, Dr. Gabel says, “Keep your takeover mindset firmly in place if you lose your job and you will see the door that opens when the other door closes. Takeover thinkers actively look for new career paths and possibilities when they are fired. They are excited about finally having the time to investigate new jobs or industries. They find that they have the energy and impetus to gather the information and make the contacts that they never had before, and they take advantage of it.”
If you watch the trends in organizations, or have even seen your own department
downsized before, then it’s wise to keep your resume up-to-date and stay active networking for other opportunities. You have to know that if it happened once in that area, it could happen again. You should always have a “Plan B” in
place (or C and D) just in case your current situation changes. Be adaptable and capable of different types of work. The more options you have the quicker you can recover. Be ready for change, don't wait until it happens to have a plan.
I encourage you to read this excellent book filled with practical scenarios and challenges. It will change your thinking.
Dr. Gary Gabel, a well-known consultant has led seminars teaching thousands the skills to empower their
lives by shedding the “victim” mentality that leads to giving personal power away to others or to fate. He clearly lays out the tools and outlines the techniques that will help you move ahead professionally, see your true options, and steer your life and career in the direction you want it to go.” |
